Regional Officer

Back in 2013, I purchased my 1990 500SL (R129) and joined the club, but my love affair with Mercedes-Benz goes back to the start of my working life. In July 1973 I started work at Cambridge Motors of Chelmsford who were the main distributors for Mercedes-Benz cars in East Anglia. In November 1973 I passed my driving test and returning to work, I proudly told my boss the good news! He asked if I had ever driven an automatic and said no I haven’t, at which point he jumped out of his office chair and said right, you‘d better have a lesson. He handed me a set of keys and led me to a dark blue 280SE W108. We got into the car and he explained not to use my left foot and I drove away from the forecourt. I successfully completed a 10 mile trip including reversing it back into a parking bay. He said well done you can drive automatics now, and this was my introduction to driving a Mercedes-Benz! Cambridge Motors closed back in 1984 and where the buildings stood became the Tesco store in Springfield Road. I left the car trade in 1984 and went into manufacturing and engineering design, but that’s another story. After joining the club in the autumn of 2013, my wife Valerie and I attended our first pub meet in the spring of 2014 and were made most welcome. This prompted us to attend various events and I volunteered to help out from parking arrangements to erecting the club gazebo. In 2015 I joined the ASR Team, as a Regional Officer. We have our regular monthly meetings at The George Restaurant and Bar, (formally the Halfway) which is located in the heart of the Essex countryside, between the beautiful villages of Coggeshall and Kelvedon. We love to drive our Mercedes on tours through Essex and Suffolk countryside and look forward to meeting you at an event soon.
