TREVOR MITCHELL

Regional Development Director

I have been a Club member for 25 years and became Northern Ireland’s first Regional Officer in 1997. One of the first events I organised was a driving event from Carryduff to The Giant’s Causeway. This was not just my first event but the first event Club event in Northern Ireland. Mike Powell our then Chairman attended with his wife Joan. We had members take part from as far away as Cork (250 miles). In those days we didn’t have any Regions in the Republic of Ireland and I, therefore, did try and have one or two drives a year into the Republic and meet up with our members there. Eventually, we started to form Regions in Ireland and now have 4 Regions there. Around 15 years ago I was appointed a Club Director to take on the new position of Regional Development Director. This role involves appointing Regional Officers as vacancies arise. In addition, approving the online requests to hold local events in their regions and their budget to organise these and similarly for events organised nationally by our Model Register Captains. Today the Club has 38 distinct regions. I would be the two-way link between RO’s, Model Register Captains and the Board and would raise any issues as necessary at a Board Meeting. For around ten years I have organised the Club’s Stand at the NEC Classic Motor show in September. I have been driving Mercedes as my everyday car for over 35 years starting with the then-new baby Merc a W201 followed by 3 E Class Estates and 4 S Classes. I have been very fortunate in collecting 5 of these from Sindelfingen and each time took the opportunity to visit other places of interest including the Porsche Factory, Schlumpf Collection, Nürburgring and Milan. When I first went on the factory tour they explained they employed 33,000 people and on the last visit this number had risen to 40,000. The only classic Mercedes I have owned and only nondiesel was a beautiful W126 which I regret selling. Now semi-retired I don’t do anything near the mileage I would have done in the past and my daily runner is a Diesel B Class which I am very pleased with.
