300SL for sale

May 2024 Wrexham £36000

I am thinking of selling my MB R107 300SL. I’m not sure how best to go about it so I thought that it would be best to start with the Club.

I joined the MB Club when I bought the car. I would prefer to see it go to a club member or enthusiast who knows what to look for in an R107 and would understand and benefit from all the work I have had done.

It is a 1988 car. Colour is Tartan Red with a cream MB Tex interior. I bought the car in 2011. Mileage is currently 142700. It has a matching hard top with stand. It has always been garaged in my ownership and sits alongside a 230SLK (which I bought from master fettler and club member, Ray Oliver.) Since I bought it, all the work on the car has been carried out exclusively by Steve Griffin (Merctec on the MB Club Forum). Anyone who is a club member and uses the forum will know that Steve is a wizard when it comes to an R107.

Over the years the vehicle has been improved no end from the ground up. I wanted to make it as good as I (or Merctec) could possibly make it. I am actually quite fastidious when it comes to cars. An example of this is that, during lockdown, I asked Steve to take out the engine and gearbox and replace all oil seals, gaskets e.g. all engine and gearbox seals, front and back, that only ever get done when they become a problem. At the same time he replaced the engine mounts and detailed the engine bay. He even replaced the transmission oil cooler pipes, one of which he told me can only be accessed when the engine is out. So, no dribbles of any liquids on my garage floor! The bill for parts for this alone came to hundreds of £'s from MB.

I am happy to talk about the work which has been done on the car and rather than list the amount of work Merctec has done over the years of my ownership which is a lot, I have created slide shows with all the pics (000's of them) he sent me. These show the work done each time it visited his workshop. Everything which usually needs to be done or replaced in a 107 of this age has been done, from the bulkhead onwards. Everything which needs to be treated with rust preventative, has been done.

I think if anyone is interested I would be pleased to have a chat about the car. I would then be happy to give any serious parties access to a drop box where I can put the slideshows. Or, I can send individual pics as requested. Bearing in mind that I use a macbook and I am not a techie, I think I can get that to work. There is also a lever arch file of bills and invoices for MB parts. Looking at these pics is not a five minute job but is is something I think those who know about the model will appreciate.

Prospective buyers might also want to talk to Steve Griffin about the work he has done on the car which would be very enlightening. Anyone who knows Steve will know that he only uses MB parts. This is a car that has had much money spent and I appreciate that I will never recoup that, but making money from cars has never been my motivation Everybody tells you to buy the best you can afford; this is such a car, and although not brand new, it has had all the major expense (and more!) taken care of.
