Dear Club Officials (and Members who may find this helpful in future),
Google have recently started to remove the ability for older email and calendar desktop and phone email clients/software to connect to their Google/Gmail accounts. This only affects clients which use the older style of login i.e. username + password. Examples of these include Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail and eM Client.
If you use the web version of Gmail , this does not affect you. So, if you log in to your gmail accounts from your browser – eg: Chrome/Microsoft Edge/Firefox/Safari/Opera/Brave etc you should be fine.
I bring this to your attention as the Club’s email system uses Gmail and one official and I were recently affected with messages of “cannot connect” etc and no emails received or sent. Google are gradually rolling this change out across all accounts but appear to have started with corporate accounts such as the Club’s. Ultimately this will affect any Gmail accounts you have, not just the Club’s. This is not something the Club has done and we have no control over email providers’ policies. The change is to provide a more secure login.
If you are still receiving new Club emails from gmail, you are unaffected. . If you are affected and use an Apple Mac, I suggest you google a solution.
Solution
If you are affected, you need to see if your email client allows a type of login called OAUTH.
On my phone it was simple to change my email settings on my phone for my Club account to OAUTH, both to receive and to send, it then required me to login into my club Google account and click “authorise”. Thereafter it has worked fine and seamlessly.
On my Windows desktop I was using Outlook 2013 which does not support OAUTH. I have downloaded a new Outlook version (free of charge) and have not lost any emails through the process.
