The London Region is inviting you to a private tour of the famous Chislehurst Caves in Caveside Close, Old Hill, Chislehurst BR7 5NL in the London borough of Bromley.
Deep under the streets of London lays a little-known slice of history.
Tours are held by lamp where you discover the ancient chambers and labyrinthine tunnels of the Caves in a mysterious and interactive manner. Brought to life by mannequins and displays, you’ll learn about the maze’s history with every step as well as ornate and gothic carvings that the looming walls display.
Once used by the Druids, Romans and Saxons for smuggling and murder, the caves have since provided storage for the Woolwich Arsenal in World War I, mushroom growing in the 20s and 30s and was used as the largest deep air raid shelter in the country during the blitz, protecting over 15, 000 people.
In the 60s and 70s the caves were used as a venue for dance and musical events with people such as Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Jimi Hendrix having been there.
The tours last for 45-50 minutes
Our ‘private’ tour is due to start at 11.15 being the ‘second’ tour of the day to give you a chance to get there.
There is an extensive car park together with a café so we can have a light lunch after our tour.
