This will be an exciting drive out opportunity to get out on the road and really enjoy your three-pointed star whist at the same time taking in some spectacular Cumbria scenery and on some really exciting and enjoyable roads.
It is proposed to undertake this drive on Saturday the 31st May to coincide with our routine club meeting at the Moota Café.
For those who would find it desirable or easier we shall start the day by meeting up at our routine monthly venue at 11.00am for our coffee, snacks and chats. That would be the Moota Café on the A595 CA13 0QE just north of the town of Cockermouth.
Leave Moota Garden Café around 12 noon.
Turn Right onto A595 and continue for ~9.8 miles.
Turn Right onto B5305 for Penrith for ~17 miles.
At Catterlen Interchange (M6 J41) take the 3rd exit at the roundabout and stay on the B5305 for about 1 mile
At the roundabout take the 5th exit onto the A6 south for ~2 miles
Turn left into Salkeld Road for ~0.2 mile.
The road takes a right and becomes Beacon Edge – continue on the road for ~2 miles.
Turn Left onto the A686 for Alston via the Hartside Pass
Stay on the A686 towards Alston for ~17.5 miles.
The Alston House Hotel will be on you left just before you enter Alston centre. Its setback from the road but plainly visible. There is ample off road hard standing parking directly opposite the hotel on the left side of the road. Park here and make you way into the hotel on the other side of the road.
We have lunch reserved for 1.45pm -2pm. Drinks and food are order and pay on the day.
Those members who would feel driving to Moota to start the day would be too much of covering the same ground twice could elect to drive direct to Alston via the Hartside Pass and meet up with club members at the Hotel for lunch between 1.45pm and 2pm.
Post lunch and with a full stomach leave the Alston House Hotel and head south on the A686 (the way you first arrived) for ~0.2 mile.
Turn right by the Alston War Memorial onto the A689 to Brampton for ~0.2 mile.
Turn right again after 0.2 mile and stay on the A689 to Brampton for ~16 miles – another scenic route.
Turn Left on the Brampton By-Pass A69 for ~2 or 3 miles to the first roundabout.
At that roundabout you have a choice to take the 1st exit and stay on the A69 towards south Carlisle if that is your best route home.
Or
Take the 2nd exit and return to the A689 going toward the north of Carlisle to pick up the Carlisle By-Pass if that’s your best route home.
The journey to Alston will be about an hour and quarter with the same duration on the route from Alston. With say 90 minutes at the Alston House hotel for lunch that would give us a drive-it day-out of about 4 hours – plus our drive time and chillout at the Moota Café at the start of the day.
Fingers crossed for good weather.
