Drive out day-Coniston Inn meal-Bluebird Speed trials

This will be an exciting day for sure. Planned and arranged for May 16th 2026 at the Coniston Inn Hotel, Hawkshead Old Rd, Coniston LA21 8AJ. If you use what3words then the location of the hotel is menu.buildings.rollover

A lovely drive-it day through spectacular lake district scenery to the Coniston Inn Hotel right on the shores of Coniston Water for a meal together and then a walk down the lovely gardens of the hotel onto their private jetty to witness the rebuilt Donald Campbells Bluebird jet boat doing its speed trials up and down the lake. The speed trails event will be well attended by public and the worlds press so this is a great opportunity to enjoy some good food and witnessing of a one-off special, world interesting event. The Bluebird speed trials will be of great public and media interest which is why this event for club members is limited to the first 20 or thereabouts who prebook. So get in early as I have little wriggle room to increase attendees.

The speed trials are however subject to the weather conditions on the day and technical issues with Bluebird. Therefore the speed trials cannot be guaranteed, but the long-range forecast is good and the fact that this is near the end of a week of trials then any technical issues should have been ironed out. The licence for the speed trials runs out on Sunday the 17th May and from that date the Bluebird will be removed from the water and goes for some restorative TLC before going back to the Ruskin museum in Coniston village to be placed on display.

It is proposed to undertake this event on Saturday the 16th May and get you good folk to drive your own way through the lovely Cumbrian scenery to meet up at the Coniston Inn Hotel – The Coniston Inn Hotel is easily visible from the road and has ample hard standing parking in its grounds. Park up and make you way into the hotel to meet up with other club members.

Drive time to the Coniston Inn is a journey of around 75minutes for most Cumbrian members.

The target time for the meal is 13.00pm. So get there in good time to park up and settle in. Food menu should be available to be emailed out to you a few weeks before hand for you to select your meal choices which need to come back to me to summarise and give to the hotel.

Post lunch and with a full stomach we can wend our way down the hotel gardens to their private jetty and hopefully watch Bluebird doing its speed trails on the water. Our departure is subject to individual wishes and by whatever route home so desired.
