To finish our regions visits for 2024, we are going to the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. Designed by the great civil engineer Thomas Telford, the docks at Ellesmere Port were still in use as late as the 1950s. You can walk around its locks, docks and warehouses and visit its forge, stables and workers’ cottages to experience life on the canal.
There’s so much to explore, from the handsome grade II Victorian buildings which house the museum’s displays, to the locks and moorings, home to colourful historic and visiting narrow boats. So whatever the weather, there is still lots to see inside.
There is a lovely café serving hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, snacks and light meals and, if the weather allows, seating outside on the “waterside terrace”.
Friendly dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead at all times.
We have been allocated a group discount (minimum of 10 people) and the cost of the visit is £9 per person. Children are the same price as this is still less than the normal child rate. Free car park is on site.
The museum opens at 10.00am, so suggest we meet at 10.30am and you can stay as long as you wish until the museum closes at 4pm. If you can’t make it for 10.30am, please come along at a time that suits you.
Payment for the visit is direct with the museum on the day, however please register your intention to come along so I know how many to expect, as the museum have indicated they will reserve part of the main car park for us.
