Windermere Jetty (Steam Boat) Museum Tour

> Back to Events

Explore Windermere’s 200-year-old boating history of the lake’s boats, builders, sailors, skills and technology through interactive display, oral histories and a fascinating collection of boats, gadgets and curiosities.

The spectacular museum reflects industry and engineering in one of England’s most famously beautiful locations, the Lake District National Park. A working destination, committed to conserving, saving and sharing its internationally important collection. You can immerse yourself in the displays, talk with the conservationists and venture out on the lake in one of the beautifully restored heritage boats.

For this tour, the Museum is permitting us to park on their concrete wharf area which is very roomy and will also be by way of a Mercedes display that members of the public can take in as well.

The Jetty museum is located on the A592 near Bowness on Windermere LA23 1BN and as you enter the grounds of the Jetty Museum proceed straight ahead and you will see the public “pay on exit” carpark on the left – ignore signs for this -and head down the large concrete ramp demarcated by a large red painted propeller. The ramp goes down to the left and then around the side of the museum. There will be one or two boats on display on the large flat jetty lower level, but we are being allowed to park and display our cars there free of  charge. I would suggest reverse parking side by side with the front of our cars displaying towards the museum. Then make your way into the foyer area of the museum. Introduce yourself as a member of the Mercedes Tour group and you will be directed towards an events meeting room were we will be provided with tea and coffee; and once we are all present the duty manager will formally welcome us and introduce us to the day planned out.

After our formal welcome we can wander around the exhibits before meeting with the boat conservationists for a chat and Q&A. This meeting is a fixed timed event so things are built around it.

After that we will be taken for a sail on the lake in a restored classic steamboat. When we return we can make our way into their restaurant, and you can enjoy hot or cold snacks or meals and take in the lovely views across the lake. Meal choices and charges will be made and paid on the day by you.

The suggested itinerary that the museum team have arranged is as follows: –

10.30 ish – Arrive, park up on the Jetty Wharf, and walk and congregate in the events room for a formal meet and greet with tea and coffee.

11.00am – Explore the museum exhibits

11.30am – Meet the conservationists and have a discussion on what is going on and see the restoration work.

12.00 noon – get on a restored steamboat and go onto the lake for a sail. About a 30minute trip. The steamboat is limited to 12 people at a time so boat trips may become a shuttle service whilst the rest of us can continue the exploration of the museum and its grounds.

From this point onwards timings are arbitrary depending on the number of people on the club tour.

13.00pm – lunch in the restaurant café and taking in the views across the lake – hot and cold foods are available for you to select and pay.

14.00pm – second boat trip on to the lake for those you who did not get the planned one at 12 noon. Depending on final numbers further boat trips can be arranged.

Club members can continue exploring on their own and depart for home on your own timetable.

The price for this amazing and interesting tour is only £22.50 per person – payable to the Club when you click the BOOK NOW button.

Select the number of people you are bringing and click the BOOK NOW button which will transport to the Clubs payment page where you will be asked to enter you card details and make full payment. If you are attending with more than one car for the tickets you bought please email me the number of cars that will be coming with your ticket purchase(s) – so I can alert the museum about the car parking space required.

Two weeks before the event, bookings will close. I will inform the museum of the final number of cars and people attending and get the club to settle the invoice formally with the museum on all our behalf. So you will have nothing to pay on the day other than your luncheon in their lovely restaurant and any memorabilia from their on-site shop.

I am quite excited about this tour. I think it will be a fascinating day out.
